Rather than seeing the body and the machine as separate entities in conflict or control, Are You Human? creates space to approach them connectedly. It explores how bodies become sites of data production, how interfaces encode bias, and how public spaces are increasingly determined by invisible systems of extraction and automation. Are you Human? is an inquiry which has emerged from the urgency to understand how evolving technologies transform and reorganize what it means to be human, to inhabit gender, class and other socio-ecological formations, in the 2020s and beyond, globally. Can technology, ecology, and society exist in dialogue? In harmony, even? What can feminist code offer in dismantling the patriarchal foundations of digital space? As technologies and Al advances, how do surveillance systems extract intimacy from already vulnerable bodies, and what forms of resistance emerge? The forest as fertile soil for theory and practice, historically a space for storytelling charged with desire. For ten days five artists and their six children live in Raabs at the Thaya. Seeking conversations with residents, encountering the forest as an experimental field. Taking five different approaches and artistic lenses the artists occupy an empty shop to generate new projects under the name “Waldfünftel” (the fifth part of the forest). The Stallecker family hosts and supports the artists by offering their space to develop new pieces entangled with “the forest”.&nbsp; GERMAN:Der Wald als offenes und für Störungen anfälliges System. Der Wald als geistiger und künstlerischer Nährboden, als geschichtlicher Erzähl-Raum und als ein Sehnsuchtsort. Fünf Künstlerinnen und ihre Kinder leben gemeinsam zehn Tage lang in Raabs an der Thaya, suchen das Gespräch mit den Menschen in Raabs und nähern sich dem breiten Thema „Wald“ an. There wasn’t yet a so-called off-the-shelf product, no mass production of electronics or personal computers. Large institutions or corporations (Bell Labs, US army, CERN etc…) could afford to house computers, but how could women artists gain access? How did it feel like to be a pioneer in this time? And how do contemporary feminist artist-hackers build on, transform and critically re-visit this legacy in order to re-consider our projections of the future? Based on two works in the Radical Software exhibition the feminist hackers Patricia J. Reis, Lale Rodgarkia-Dara and Stefanie Wuschitz will talk about a vibrant network of artists around Mz*Baltazar’s Laboratory. We invite you to a conversation among feminist activists, artists and hackers to unpack the radical entanglement of tech, art and gender. What are the agendas and strategies for a subversive use of technology today? The event is free of charge with a valid exhibition ticket and will be held in English at Kunsthalle Wien Atelier. Patrícia J. Reis is a media artist and researcher exploring human-technology relations through feminist perspectives. She develops interactive interfaces and media installation focused on haptics, sensuality, and embodiment. She currently holds a position as Senior Post-Doc and lecturer at The University of Applied Arts in Vienna/ Department Digital Arts. Lale Rodgarkia-Dara, is a writer and sonic artist. 
Since 2003 she has held workshops and trainings in informal and formal education structures and is engaged in community work. She produces and develops art that is somehow always related to spaces and spheres in transition, radio, literature and media-art interplaying with open source technology. Currently she is running Radio Helsinki, the free radio in Graz, Austria, as a strategic CEO and is lecturing at the University of Applied Arts. Stefanie Wuschitz is an arts-based researcher investigating strategies to decolonise technology. She has published on feminist hacking as artistic practice. Her artwork has been exhibited and screened at international venues and festivals. She currently conducts research on Digital Colonialism at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Mz*Baltazar’s Lab is a feminist art independent space and community that aims at generating a culture of fearless making! An environment that fosters creativity, activism and provocative thinking under the umbrella of art, science, gender and technology. Based in the 20th district of Vienna, Mz*Baltazar’s Lab curates workshops and exhibitions with a particular focus on female* creatives. But to deal with emerging feelings of despair and unsettling questions that shake up core values I sometimes need more than that. Art can be a way of processing complex, dark, traumatic, content that is hard to unpack. Having lived in South East Asia as an arts-based researcher for six months now, I have gone through different stages of grief. And I still digest all the things I heard in interviews and conversations. Some of them pop up in this animation. After countless dark, vibrant and sleepless nights what gave me new courage was looking at street art in the morning. "Only the dead know the end of the war" is one of these sentences I discovered on a street wall, written in a different language. The two creatures in the last scene of my animation, with one eye each merging into a single face, are also inspired by a simple drawing someone painted on a street wall. Like street artists, it helps me a lot to express myself, because this way the restlessness decreases. I feel more safe again and have an easier time finding important allies who validate and enable each other's struggle. This way I also found the people who helped me to make this animation: Asara Panyalai, Wahyudi Tanjung Raupp, A. Semali and Surya Widodo. Technology is not neutral. We investigate alternative hardware from locally sourced materials from a feminist perspective, to develop and speculate upon renewable practices. We call it Feminist Hardware! Feminist Hardware is developed without mining in harmful ways, in an environmentally friendly way, under fair working conditions, and is manufactured from ubiquitously available materials, without generating e-waste, with consent, love and care. https://ars.electronica.art/starts-prize/en/clay-pcb/ We researched on fair-traded, ethical, biodegradable hardware for environmental justice, building circuits that use ancient community-centered crafts encouraging de-colonial thinking, market forces to be disobeyed, and future technologies to be imagined. Our artistic outcome is an Ethical Hardware Kit with a PCB microcontroller at its core. Our PCB is made of wild clay retrieved from the forest in Austria and fired on a bonfire. Our conductive tracks used urban-mined silver and all components are re-used from old electronic devices.
